you mean a smoke detector? a hallway near the bedrooms.

Follow the instructions on the package. Location will depend on type of detector and lay out of apartment. Certainly one in the hallway outside the bedroom but the second location varies

I would make sure to place one on the outside of the door where you sleep and possibly near the hot water heater if electric, if it is gas you might need a combo smoke detector with the carbon monoxide detector in it also. I would still place one in or right outside of the kitchen.
