trying to change the smoke detector at my house.?
but couldn’t find the switch to turn the power for the smoke detectors off, so the red light is still on… anyone who’s changed a smoke detector has any tips on this object?

i doesn’t have batteries, it is hard-wired

A smoke detector has 3 wires (if connected to the 120v power).
the battery back-up continues even if the power is cut off.
The power comes from the main panel and should have it’s own breaker (or Fuse).
You turn this off and then disconnect the wiring and remove the unit.
To replace the unit with the same type (120v with battery backup) you connect the white wire to the white (neutral) and black to the incoming power line. the red is used to connect it to the next detector down the line. (cap it off if it is not used).

if your smoke detector is on batteries than unscrew the cap and take out the batteries,the alarm wont goes on since it detect smoke only.
There isn’t a power switch for smoke detectors.
The red light is either from your house’s electricity or the battery backup. Either way – don’t worry about it. Just take the smoke detector off the wall , disconnect the power cord (if there is one) and then connect the new one.
