cook on high heat for 10 secs on both sides then lower heat to minimum and cook on both sides gently, turning often time depends on your liking , rare or burnt. When it looks like your kind of steak, it's ready

You could braise it in the oven. The smoke is being generated by the fat. Use little or no fat in your frying pan or buy one of those George Foreman type fat-draining grills. they really work and taste better than frying.

Get the steak out of the fridge 10 minutes before cooking, rub over with olive oil, season and grill.

Jamie Oliver rump steak is damned fine.

I had a similar problem in my flat - as you say, high heat in a pan is the *only* way to cook steak. So, my solution was to close the kitchen door (smoke detector outside kitchen), open the window, cook the steak, serve it and while it was resting, run the pan in the sink. Then serve balance of meal, smoke should be gone, and open kitchen door once more.

Another option is the remove the alarm battery for the duration, but that involves stepladders and a good memory (now where did I put that battery ....?)

If your alarm is mains operated you could change from a smoke to a heat detector. If your alarm is battery only try switching from an ionisation to an optical detector, less sensitive to cooking steak !!
