Has anyone got any idea how i can cook a steak without setting off the fire alarm in my flat?
I’ve cooked a steak a couple of era but both era the fire alarm was set off. Has anyone got an alternative way of cooking it instead of in the frying pan on a high heat? As this is the only method i know and still have a tasty steak, thanks.

Take the battery out of your smoke detector. Don’t not remember to place it back when you have finished cooking.
cook it rare
learn to cook not cremate???
grill it…..or DONT BURN IT
turn off the fire alarm until you have finished cooking….
take the battery out till youve made it then place it back in
Get yourself a low-cost extractor fan. Save you loads of hassle, or go the fire alarm away from the kitchen
frying pan on low heat!!!
take the battery out while you cook the steak – just dont set fire to the flat!
Place a set of "Ear Defenders On" and you will have the perfect steak..
Under the Grill or in one of those Grills you shut down over the Steak,,,,,,Keep the kitchen window open,,,,,
I agree with orphan boy, take out the battery but remember to place it back in. I not remember and get my ears bent from my husband.
A steak should only be cooked for a couple of minutes on each side if you want it nice and rare. Make sure you have ventilation, open your windows in the kitchen and use the extractor fan.
How about a small electric grill on the veranda or patio.
using the microwave oven. it’s simple.
You don’t have to cook it on high. You can cook a steak in a pan at lower temps and it will turn out just fine. Just cook until browned on both sides. If you want it cooked more in the midpoint, you can always pop it in the oven for a couple more minutes, but mostly the slower cooking will cook the insides to about the right temperature.
Disconnect the fire alarm until you have finished cooking. Only you can hear it, not the fire department.
When we cook our steak in a none stick fry pan, we use medium heat. Four minutes per side for rare. More time for medium or well done.
Take the battery out of the alarm until you have finished cooking it then place it back in
cook it on a low heat, and open the window while you cook!
if your kitchen has a door, then close it and open a window.. its what i do, and whats awesome about it is that you can play music in there and its like your own small world!!
First thing first…Is there an exhaust fan on your stove that will take the smoke out?
The way many restaurants do it, is to place it to the pan at first, to "sear it" then place it to the oven at about 400 degrees until it is how you like it.
Fact is, searing a steak in a pan makes smoke….You need to figure a way to get that smoke out…Or turn off the smoke alarm (but I would not recommend it)
cook on high heat for 10 secs on both sides then lower heat to minimum and cook on both sides gently, turning often time depends on your liking , rare or burnt. When it looks like your kind of steak, it’s ready
You may possibly braise it in the oven. The smoke is being generated by the stout. Use small or no stout in your frying pan or buy one of those George Foreman type stout-draining grills. they really work and taste better than frying.
Get the steak out of the fridge 10 minutes before cooking, rub over with olive oil, season and grill.
Jamie Oliver rump steak is damned fine.
I had a similar conundrum in my flat – as you say, high heat in a pan is the *only* way to cook steak. So, my solution was to close the kitchen door (smoke detector outside kitchen), open the window, cook the steak, serve it and while it was resting, run the pan in the sink. Then serve balance of meal, smoke should be gone, and open kitchen door once more.
A further option is the remove the alarm battery for the duration, but that involves stepladders and a excellent reminiscence (now where did I place that battery ….?)
If your alarm is mains operated you may possibly change from a smoke to a heat detector. If your alarm is battery only try switching from an ionisation to an optical detector, less insightful to cooking steak !!
Cook it in a George Forman grill- brilliant and more healthy than frying !
i have read some of the answers and i just laughed at some of them Scot what restaurants have you been to not excellent ones i reckon i am a chef i have been doing this since 1970 and am well qualified so to resolution this question is relatively simple . i am assuming that by fire alarm you mean the smoke detector a fine piece of equipment but sadly the bane of many a cook whilst they are indeed a life saving device you would reckon that they would have come up with a solution when it comes to cooking . sadly this is not so so if you want a steak or whatever cooked the way that you like it then sorry just disconnect the darn thing until you have finished cooking and then reconnect it when you have finished but with the technology they have now you would reckon this would have been sorted out by now
I have a smoke alarm on my canal boat and it is so insightful that it goes off even when the kettle boils.
It has now got to the point that I twist the top off and stick it in a cupboard before I start cooking, then replace it when I’ve finished.
Yours must unscrew to be able to replace the battery.
You may possibly try browning it on both sides, then pop it in the oven to end off.
